As another evening of decision approached in BR, Nov. 4, 1961, the fans again made their mark. Instead of airplane leaflets as in 1959, the OM players received a box bearing a Louisiana postmark crammed full of panties. Several Rebel veterans shook the tension by parading in their new attire inside the athletic dorm.
The following was written by Ed Tunstall for the AP.

BATON ROUGE, Nov. 5- By dawn's early light on a Nov. morning-after deep in Dixie, it's fairly easy to take a closer look at the big plays in LSU's 10-7 victory over OM.
Setting the stage quickly, bear in mind OM was bidding for the national championship. The Rebs carried a #2 national rating into the game and Michigan State the #1 team, had lost 13-0 to Minnesota earlier in the day.
This OM team had rolled up 204 points and allowed just 13 in crushing six opponents. But then, OM hadn't beaten LSU in four years.
With 68,000 fans in TS, this was the scene, with LSU - beaten only once in six games and ranked sixth nationally--a one-touchdown underdog.
The Tigers, using quarterback Jimmy Field on crushing power sweeps around end, marched to the OM 27 where halfback Wendell Harris sailed a field goal for three points.
This stood until the dying moments of the first half when OM qb Glynn Griffing passed two yards to end Wes Sullivan, capping a 63-yard march. Sullivan converted. OM 7-3 at the half.
It was the first OM td against LSU since 1957.
Then, with less than six minutes left in the 3rd, came the Tigers's three biggest plays of the game.
From the LSU 20, halfback Jerry Stovall found a fault in the OM line and danced 57 yds before he was hauled down at the OM 23. On 4th down, qb Lynn Amedee completed LSU's only pass with Bill Truax picking the ball off his shoe laces at the OM 12 for a first down.
On 3rd down from the nine, Harris rolled around left end for the winning touchdown.

The Rebels spent the last quarter knocking as Elmore moved to the Tiger 23 where a pass was intercepted. Then with 1:40 left, Griffing was "smothered" on fourth down at the LSU 40. "HELL OF A BALLGAME"

like it matters anyways.. all three are a farce.. of course so is Ole Miss

sigh....

JS edited the source post... He was referring to 61 as one of the years Ole Miss claims a NC... becuase they have their three painted in their stadium...

but he was incorrect.. it was 59, 60, & 62 that they claim championships.... not 61 as he had originally said in the firts post of this thread....

not that it matters as the old article is a great read/find!
