LSU #1 Defense in YPG They moved up to #1 overtaking Ohio State (whose defense is pretty much a complete fraud). LSU is giving up 236.8 while OSU is giving up 237.5. From the rhetoric on this board, you would think LSU was ranked #33 yielding 340 some-odd yards per game. LSU also leads the nation in yards per play at a scant 3.6. There are only 3 teams in the nation that average less than 4.3. LSU is also ranked #9 in ppg allowed. Had they shut out La Tech on Saturday (which they should have), LSU would be ranked #5. Of course it has been well chronicled that LSU's achilles' heel is redzone defense. We made our first stop all year vs La. Tech on keeping a team from scoring in the redzone. Let's hope it turns into a trend. If it does, no one comes close to beating LSU from here on out. Here's to you Mr. Pelini for doing another great job this season.
Hey, I take offense to the use of the term Mighty Ducks. That termed is reserved for our hockey team out here, even if it has gone by the wayside. Yes, hockey, it's worse than a Yankee sport, it's a Canadian sport.
The Achilles heel of our defense is our secondary. They've been exploited and picked on all year long. They're physical guys and great tacklers, but their coverage is very ugly to watch. Of course with the exception of Chevis Jackson, who continuously proves to be one of the best corners in college football. I bet if our opponents tried to run more in the redzone, we'd be the best redzone defense in the nation. Our front 7 are man eaters, they're "like 700 pound gorrillas with a chainsaw......."
Our Achilles heel is getting pressure. Because our defensive line is so good we trust them sometimes when we shouldn't because they are tired. Our secondary may be weaker than our defensive line, but they are better than and other secondary around, but no one can cover for a long time without any pressure on the QB. BTW, we have damn strong Achilles heel.
you're both right. lack of pressure gives the qb time to pick apart the secondary. but guys like mccray and zenon are having off years. it was good to see zenon get the pick saturday night. the D will be just fine.
I won't blame McCray. He's a sophomore and he's playing out of position. The guy is a SS but they're playing him as a corner. It's Zenon that has been playing ugly, he's a senior for god's sake!!!
I would have to agree that our defense is pretty stout: LSU is #6 in the country in Passing Defense giving up 170.8 yds/game. #1 Rutgers is giving up 153.2 yds/game. I'd say that giving up only 17.6 yards per game more than the #1 team in this category is pretty damn good. Oddly, Notre Dame is just ahead of us, giving up only 164.9 passing yards/game. LSU is #3 in the country in Rushing Defense, giving up 66.0 yds/game. They are Ranked behind Oregon St (62.1y/g) and Boston College (65.7y/g.) Again, I'd say that this is pretty damn impressive since we're giving up only 3.9 yards/game more than the #1 team. LSU is #9 in the country in Scoring Defense, giving up 16.7 points/game. The #1 team in this category is Ohio St (11.4p/g). We are currently giving up 5.3 more points per game than the best scoring defense in college football. Not bad. LSU is #5 in Turnover Margin, at +13. Guess what? Kansas is #1 at +20. Maybe we need a few more takeaways, but still this is an impressive margin. LSU is #9 in Turnovers Gained, with 26 turnovers gained. Cincinnati leads the nation with 35, while Kansas is tied with USF for second with 31 each. LSU is not even in the top 56 for Turnovers Lost. That's a really good thing! Baylor is #1 in the nation with 35 turnovers lost. Not good for them. ** Stats found at CNNSI.com **
