I won't start worrying about the PAC 12 until I start to see a team shutting other PAC 12 teams down. If you start to see a duck team shutting down the other team , allowing less than 14 points per conference game, you then worry about them. As long as the scores are like 47-42 and 51-36 you don't have to worry. They don't have a defense and don't play teams with one. You won't see many years where lsu or bama let's a team score 40+ points in a game. It's a bad year when one team scores 40 points on you. You won't be winning many sec titles with a defense allowing that many points. PAC 12 teams let other teams score 40 points on them regularly.
This. It's about talent, and high school football talent is concentrated in the southeast. You will never lure enough of those kids away from home. California has a lot of talent, but not enough to support an entire conference.
USC made some headway recruiting nationally ... but got caught cheating Their return will likely see them try to establish a great defense again, but it ain't SMASHMOUTH and it doesn't prepare them for the 60 minute wars and gladiatorial beatings of the SEC on a week-by-week basis:hihi:
Unless the pac-12 is going to spread that money out to their local high schools, it's pretty unlikely they will overtake the SEC. They don't understand that the "output" of the SEC depends on the "product" entering into the SEC schools. The best high school players in the country come from the South, including Texas. They only get to nibble on these players, most of whom stay close enough for their family and friends to see them play. Unless they are able to increase the numbers of great high school players admitted to their institutions (not counting the jails), they will be forever also-rans.

When Rich Brooks was coach, he often compared Oregon's small population base, and our proximity to the huge masses in California. .To Oklahoma's similar situation with Texas. He said, "I don't see why Eugene can't be another Norman, Oklahoma". I agree, as long as we have great coaches, there's no reason why we can't excel. And if the spoiled children cheat,.. well, it just makes it more fun when we beat them.
