What upsets me the most is why Trindon Holliday is back on kickoff returns. They don't seem to make an effort to get him the ball even though they line up on top of each other during the kick. So if he doesn't return the kick, we have one less blocker becasue he barely even tries to get in the way of anyone because he will get demolished. And quite frankly, I don't know that he's that great at returning kicks anyway. But certainly not for what it costs us.
No Coach Paul Mainieri is going to hire him to be our pitching coach. Yep Lou Holtz is going to give our piotchers expertise in throwing the , you guessed it, spit ball !!!!! Drool rules !!!! Fear the spitter ! Agreed, our special teams are vanilla at best. Major room for improvement, especially punt returns. What is our longest punt return this year ? 15 yards ? EDIT: Here are the punt return stats PUNT RETURNS No. Yds Avg TD Long --------------------------------------- Chad Jones 10 78 7.8 0 16 Jared Mitchell 4 19 4.8 0 8 T. Holliday 1 0 0.0 0 0 Early Doucet 1 5 5.0 0 5 Total.......... 16 102 6.4 0 16 Opponents...... 13 131 10.1 1 61
It is amazing that they haven't been able to come up with a decent punt returner, given all the talent at hand. They get almost nothing out of that aspect of the game. This week, they were apparently unable to explain the art of the fair catch to Chad Jones. Kick coverage looked pretty sharp early in the year, but has regressed although I don't think it's been terrible. I am not sure the punt coverage has been that bad either, this week's TD return notwithstanding. Teams aren't kicking to Holliday much. For years, I've been frustraed by LSU's inability to find a reliable placekicker, although David has kicked pretty well lately. It would be nice to see one of our guys come close to blocking a punt now and again. I don't think it's a crisis, but there is definitely room for improvement.
Scotty is right about this...I paid particular attention to the players who rushed the punter. After the kick was away, they just sort of milled around doing nothing in particular. Or so it seemed. Are they supposed to wait for the play to come to them to determine who, where and if they should block for the returner? I just wondered why they were wandering around 40 yards away from play. (I never played on punt return team, so don't know what their assignments might be.) Can someone who knows more about this please comment? I'd appreciate it! ldskule:
Well obviously Frank Beamer is great at special teams but i meant coaches we could actually convince to coach our special teams specifically.
