I'm not saying that the calls weren't legit, just that those plays happen through all games but they always get called on LSU and don't get called on other teams near as often. For instance, the late hit by Tyson Jackson. He had his head down & was within a step. I'm not saying that it isn't a late hit, just that it happens all the time & usually isn't called when it's that close. I dunno, maybe I'm seeing this through purple & gold glasses... Maybe this team plays with a little too much fire, which causes penalties, but I still say a lot of them don't need to be called & wouldn't be if we would finesse the refs.
Properly executed, the pre-snap shift does a lot of things. First and foremost, it gets the first down. Second, it changes teh way the AMAB players are keying off the OL, because they have to second guess the snap count. The down & distance were perfect for it because the AMAB defense was looking for a run up the middle; when the O-line shifts closer to the center, the D-line is very likely to jump. However, it wasn't executed properly, as proven by the fact that the referee behind Flynn threw his flag before the AMAB players moved (as seen on the end zone shot). As far as running the ball, you have to have balance. If we just stopped throwing the ball, defenses would be able to put 10 in the box and stop the run, no matter who is the RB. This is Offense 101. When Gary Crowton got here, everybody had been whining about Jimbo's "conservative" play calling. Now that Crowton throws some wrinkles, like the Doucet pass to Flynn (which I loved), somebody wants to only run the ball. Sure, Flynn had a rough 2d qtr, but on the road into an inspired defense, he drove us for a tying TD with less than 5 min left. I thought the play calling was fine. GEAUX TIGERS
Been thinking about this play since it happened. Trying to remember if I've ever seen a dumber call. Still haven't remembered one. I'm still thinking about it.
