http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/columns/story?columnist=maisel_ivan&id=3093739 If you erase all the turnovers from both teams tonight, it's a pretty convincing win for the tigers. If you erase all the penalties from both teams in the Kentucky game, we're undefeated. What is the problem with our lack of discipline with penalties? Turnovers I can forgive, as they haven't done that habitually. But this most penalized team in the SEC is getting pricey. Hasn't LSU been one of the most penalized teams in the country for a few years now? Is this Miles' fault? What can be done? Another rant I want to make is about our offense. We've got Hester, Williams, Murphy, Holiday, and Scott. One of the nastiest running games in the country. Why then are we calling plays where Flynn has to act like Peyton freaking Manning? I don't get it. Nothing is more demoralizing to the opposing defense than being consistently unable to stop a ground attack. Why are we relying so much on our air attack (which is decent, but not stellar) while our ground attack is safer, more reliable, and so damned good? This isn't a needless flame. I'm looking for discussion about this, as these, in my opinion, are the only real obstacles to us being unstoppable.
I actually enjoyed seeing us run Flynn alot. I know it was risky.. Same mentality as Florida used against us -- run right at them. No one was expecting that.
I'm glad to see Miles' reaction. These mistakes MUST be fixed if we want to win the National Championship.
I might be flamed for this but when every game you have so many penalties only coaches are to blame. It was surprising to see Coaches give up on the running game so easily though.
You won't be flamed.. I do disagree though. The coaches can discipline.. but the players are the one who commit personal fouls, offsides.. etc. All coaches can do is try. They have no power over the act itself.
I think it's safe to say that Miles can't be criticized for discipline with players off the field because he's kicked off a total of 4 players just this year. However, he seems to lack the disciplining of players for IN GAME infractions. Yet another game where Tyson Jackson commits a bone-headed personal foul/late hit on a 3rd down play that resulted in an automatic first down and our opponent scores a go-ahead TD on the VERY next play. As much as Jackson has helped our defense, I can't help but be infuriated with his dirty play this season. :dis: Personal foul penalties are inexcusable, IMO and those the commit this STUPID penalties would be HATING life come Monday because they would be running until the cows came home.
As for Season High Penalties this is how it looked: 2004 Penalties........... 10 vs Ole Miss (Nov 20, 2004) Penalty Yards....... 76 vs Ole Miss (Nov 20, 2004) 2003 Penalties........... 13 vs Florida (Oct 11, 2003) Penalty Yards....... 99 vs Florida (Oct 11, 2003) 2002 Penalties........... 13 at Kentucky (Nov 09, 2002) Penalty Yards....... 104 at Kentucky (Nov 09, 2002) 2001 Penalties........... 13 vs Illinois (Jan 01, 2002) Penalty Yards....... 113 vs Illinois (Jan 01, 2002) 2000 Penalties........... 13 vs UAB (Sep 23, 2000) AND at Ole Miss (Nov 11, 2000) Penalty Yards....... 113 vs UAB (Sep 23, 2000) and who was coaching then? Hmmmm?
My impression is that Miles doesn't try to get "good" calls from the refs. He prefers to let them call the game and trust in his players to get the job done. The problem is that other coaches know that being friendly at times & chewing the ear off of the refs at others can make subtle differences in their play calling. This is the only explanation I have for it because our team doesn't look particularly undisciplined on the field. We just get called for a lot of stuff that other teams don't.
But were we ever the most penalized team in the SEC?We will slip again is we keep on committing stupid penalties again and again. It needs to be addressed immediately.
