I don't think Williams' and Scott's legs would go stale if they regularly got 5-10 carries a game. I love the committee approach, as you said, it keeps everyone relatively fresh. But, I am not seeing that. I am seeing Hester as the clear #1 tailback, occasionally being spelled by the other guys. Hester should definitely get the short yardage carries (remember when the season opened at it looked like that was going to be Williams' role? WTF?), and I don't have any problem with him being the leader in total carries, but I think the other guys are too good to keep under such heavy wraps.
1st of all let me start bye saying that i luv jacob hester. I think he is one a good football player lets break him down as a player. 1. Great short yardage runner 2. Great Blocker 3. Very good hands (catches ball very well out of backfield) Hester's good points end right there he will play on sunday. But he want be a 1st round pick, 3rd round in my opinion he will probably have a long NFL career as a special teamer maybe a fullback or 3rd down option because of his hands. Hester just doesnt have the pure athletecism to play RB at the next level. And before any of you go off remember, that we had a great athlete play football at LSU whom you and i know hester is not even close to talent wise and he doesnt start in the NFL. Im talking about Kevin Faulk Scott,Murphy and Williams are far more talented than hester when it comes to running the ball. There are times when hester cant turn the corner or just cant quite get there and i know either of the other guys could have. examples 1. Williams touchdown run against auburn our 1st score of the night i gurantee you hester wouldnt have gotten to the 15 yard line. 2. Murphy's crucial 1st dwon run in the 4th quarter against florida. remember the little flare pass that was thrown behind the line, hester would not have made it pass the line of scrimmage not enough speed. 3. Scott what can i say the entire kentucky game. The point is there all better runners hester just does somethings better. Overall he is a good football player a good person a 4 yr starter so he get's the carries there isnt one LSU football player that will tell you hester is a better runner than any of the other guys not with a straight face. To just fill everyone in the reason he gets more carries is SENIORITY. I frankly dont believe he is an every down back cause he is not a gamebreaker usually gets run down after about 8yds. The NFL scout report will look alot like this Jacob Hester Goob Blocker Good in short yardage Good Hands Good Football Player 3rd string back will be a good special team player
While we're on the subject, another thing I'd like to see when RP comes into the game is for him to play more than one down. If memory serves, against VT, he'd play an entire series. Now, it seems like he only gets one down. And he hands off or runs the option 99% of the time. Can a QB really get into a rhythm when he's only playing one down here, one down there?
This is absolutely right. He doesn't run hard like Hester. As soon as he gets hit, he's down. On kick returns, he half asses it waiting for the big hole which he's not gonna get and BAMM, gets tackled around the 20. We should have Richard Murphy and Holiday returning kickoffs.
While I'd also like to see more of KW and CS, Hester IS getting the job done. What more could we want? And, no, he hasn't broken a long one, but he has the speed to do so...he fetched Simeon Castile from behind on that INT. And who cares WHAT his NFL potential is? I don't. I just want LSU to win. Hester is a winner, he is a senior, he is productive; therefore, he should play.
I think this is simple. Hester is the senior, he's a leader on and off the grass, he hasn't fumbled (at all) in an obscene number of carries, he's a great blocker (I said great), he's a reliable receiver, he hits the hole faster and harder than the other backs, he runs in a crowd harder than the other backs, and he's a senior (I know, I said it twice, but it's important). I absolutely love K. Williams and (if you review my posts) I was questioning early on why he wasn't getting the chance to break out. But I get it now. Hester is the best all purpose back we have. That means K. Williams is a feature back right now. Next year, he gets to break out, if Scott and Murphy don't press him for the job. What a frickin' awesome position to be in.
No, it is DEPENDABILITY and VERSATILITY. A top running back has to catch, block, and pick up the blitz, not just run to daylight. Williams and Scott are improving constantly and will be stud SEC backs when their time comes.
I have been saying this before the season started and I still believe the Keiland Williams should be the starting running back with Jacob Hester as the fullback. Hester is a very good back and has great vision and is a beast between the tackles. Williams has just as good vision and has more speed once he gets to the second level of defenders and can make people miss. I would like to see Williams get the majority of the carries to get in a rythm and be more effective, with Hester being used as a receiver out of the back field and when short yardage is needed.
