There is clearly a problem with special teams. Performance has been consistently mediocre at best and awful at worst over the last several years, and that begins and ends with Brad Peveto. Last year LSU was able to give Holliday opportunities to turn it upfield. Now, there are no chances to return punts, and everything is fair caught. LSU is 110th in kickoff returns and 102nd in punt returns (out of 119 DI-A schools). That is frightening. "Punt ugly" was supposed to give gunners a better chance at stuffing returns, and not only has that not happened, but coverage seems to have gotten worse. I try not to be rash or premature about saying coaches should be fired, but after the kick return coverage I saw last night, I have had enough. La. Tech is pretty good at returns (21st), but if special teams continue to play like this, teams like Arkansas will give us a LOT of trouble.
I think that a better solution is to find someone to coach ST exclusively. Coaches Porter and Peveto have other units to coach in addition to ST.
He doesn't need to go, we just need a specific ST coach like has already been said. Our linebacking corps has been solid all year, so he's doing something right with them.
The kickoff coverage was pathetic against Tech. Waaaay to much space for the returner. Whatever the solution, it needs to be found, preferably sooner than later.
Hey, I know - how about when we kick the ball, our guys run down to where the ball lands and knock the slobber outa the first guy to grab it! Seriously, though, this is a real concern. Surely better minds than mine are at work on this. At least I hope so.ldskule:
I'd be surpised if it can be fixed this late in the season. Are we too poor to pay a coach devoted to ST alone?
When it cost us a close game...ie Bama almost...Then it'll be a problem. and people will get the Axe. I can see this problem building up since day one. It will bite us in the ass, if we don't address it quickly.
