It seems whenever a top team loses there is another leading candidate, as annoited by the media, that is demoted to an also ran. The criteria for the award as I understand it is supposed to be the best college football player, period. Now I know RB's and QB's from big time schools are generally the winners, and I can live with that, but it seems lately that winning the award is growing more dependent on having a team vying for a national title. Some analysts I have heard on TV have also linked it to a MVP type of award also. First they were high on Tebow, but when Florida notched 3 losses his glamour faded. Keep in mind his stats didn't fade and he was not the goat in any of the losses. Then they talked up the Boston College QB as the leading candidate. A loss, coupled with a few interceptions, and he is out of the race. Now the flavor of the week is the Oregon QB because they are now the darlings of the media. Skip Bayless on ESPN is pulling for Ohio State's QB because they are undefeated and his stats are good, not great. Never mind that their defense and RB are the strengths of their team and his stats are worse than Troy Smith, last year's winner. Give the award to the best player! It isn't an MVP either. You shouldn't have to play for a title to win it. If McFadden averages 200 yds a game against SEC teams --give it to him--I don't care if Arkansas finishes last in the SEC. Now this foolishness could actually hurt LSU in the polls because the heisman hooplah around the Oregon QB certainly won't hurt Oregon should they win out.
It is better without paragraphs because it is a true rant which is better conveyed by runon sentences poor punctuation and rambling even though the thoughts expressed are good ones sought of like this sentence I just wrote.
Sadly, IMO, the Heisman has lost something over the years. To me, the significance or cache of the award has fallen. Maybe it is because too many winners disappointed expectations of future greatness, maybe the award process has become too tied together with poll standings as the OP feels
Ditto. I don't think it would be a miscarriage of justice if Dixon wins it. The three losses kills Tebow's chances, since he's the QB (however unfair that may be.)
Yeah that was my only question, who is 1 vs 2. Very very close. If Oregon gets upset, I think McFadden wins, regardless of Arkansas' record. Look for him to put up 200+ vs Tennessee on Saturday. Unfortunately for him the game is NOT televised.
The Heisman Trophy has been perverted to the point of being virtually meaningless. The original poster is right, it has become a team award. The media eventually ruin everything they touch.
Tebow is just a sophomore so he has a few more years to win it. I say give it to Mcfadden. Perhaps it elevates his draft status (is he turning pro after this season?).
