Because Miles was quoted in the newspaper saying something to the effect that Cutrera would play in Beckwith's absence, but that he might also try some packages where he would move other backers around to play the position also. I can't recall if he mentioned Riley or Sanders by name, but that was my take on it. Perhaps someone else can find the article from earlier this week.
Even if Beckwith is back, I would like to see our safeties in the box a lot. I think Steltz and Jones are tremendous athletes and agree that they will be key, especially Steltz, in shutting down the Arky running game. I believe I read recently that Steltz is 1st or second in total tackles for us currently. Chad Jones has tremendous natural talent and just needs experience.
I realize that. What I meant was, why would Riley come in for Beckwith in the Bama game if Cutrera is the back-up as quoted by Miles?
Yes you are supposed to get down the field soon, but for LSU they got there really quickly, but they over ran the punt. If you notice when he caught the ball there were about 5 players that were on the same yard line as the receiver. All he had to do was miss one player and he then has 5-6 players in his rearview mirror, with 5 left to go. Half the punt team over ran the punt and didn't keep the receiver in front of them. That was the easiest punt retrun I've seen.
I remember noticing that too. From my recollection, the receiver was even, actually, in front of a couple- they'd run past him........going the opposite direction, that is. Also, after they were stopped/flat-footed, they weren't about to catch that rascal.
If you can't beat them join them. I looked at it as being more than flat footed. Notice how our players that are nearest to the returner do not converge on him. They continue to run straight ahead instead of pinching in to attempt a tackle. My first thought was that they are inexperienced and took the concept of staying in your lane to the extreme. I didn't even see a move that would have froze them, he just ran straight ahead down the middle of 2 defenders.
We might want to get used to Cutrera. I am guessing he will be starting at MLB next year with Beckwith and Riley at OLB.
Actually, upon watching the second half of the replay, we were playing McCray at linebacker most of the time. Sanders did not play much at all. I don't know if it was due to injury, but I didn't see him get hurt. He also came in and went out of the game on one occasion which made me believe he wasn't hurt. Perhaps we felt we matched up better with McCray. I really haven't been recognizing all season long just how much Sanders or McCray plays OLB.
Cutrera was chasing someone much faster than he is. Plus, he was at least, trying to catch him. Lafell whiffed on his first chance at the return man and didn't hustle at all to run him down.
