I was thinking the same thing. I will really help us with the La boys that are considering Bama. I might take some hits for this. I never thought Saban was that great of a coach. Sure he is a great recruiter and great teacher but he lost some games at LSU he shouldn't have lost and the UAB game stands out like a sore thumb. Great coaches don't lose those games. I am thankful for all he did to the program but I don't think he is a better coach than Les Miles. :milesmic:
Booty. For those who don't think Saban was a great coach, I really wonder if you understand the state of our team before Saban got here and after he left. Before, we were at best a blip on the radar nationally. After, we are a national power. I think Saban and Miles have different strengths. I am very happy Saban came when he did. I'm not sure Miles could have turned things around the way Saban did. At the same time, I think Miles is possibly running with the baton Saban gave him better than Saban could of. Saban was so detail oriented it may have been something of a hindrance the better we got as a team. On the other hand, I'm still not fully sold on Miles being better than a Fulmer or Carr. The guy does have guts though and has been doing something right in leading LSU to its most prosperous stretch... ever? I know I give Miles a hard time, but I feel like I have to give him a hard time to honestly evaluate him. I think he's got a special personality that allows him to recruit well and get players excited to play for him that may be tough for me to pick up on because of my own personality.
You're 100% correct. Saban brought a killer instinct to the LSU football program that hadn't been seen since the late 50's-early 60's. I like Miles. I think he's an outstanding coach, but I don't see the team discipline that Saban brought to LSU. Does anyone recall a penalty for taking a helmet off while Saban was at LSU? I think that Saban is done moving around and you're going to see a Bear Bryant type of Bama emerge very shortly. Roll Tide...Beat Auburn!!! (Why would anyone pull for Auburn to win anything?)
I will always look at Saban as the godfather responsible for the Tiger team's dynasty, but I would also scorn him for being lured away and abandoning his player and team for $ and power, i.e. Miamia and Bama. He can really recruit, and so can Miles, IMO.
I think both are great coaches. I love them both for what they have done for LSU football. Nick got us back in the limelight and Miles is keeping us in it.
Miles did some amazing things at OSU. He showed he could turn a struggling program around. I think that he could have done the same here even more easily with the talent in this state if he had taken over after Dinardo. Saban did a great job at LSU, but there is no reason to assume that Miles couldn't have done it. Heck with a better DC, Dinardo would have done it. "Sleeping Giant" Now Miles is showing that he can improve a recently improved program. I think all the things that Miles has done in his career is pretty danged impressive! Much more so than Saban. Sure LSU is a bit undisciplined right now, but I think that we have gone through phases like this in the past and it can and will be corrected. I also think that after this win, he has the chance to prove that he can take a top program and maintain it in the national spotlight. I understand your propensity to judge Miles harshly in order to try to be balanced. I usually do that as well, but if you really step back and look at Miles's career, it looks pretty good. I think that this game is a monkey off their back and a wake up call. Now they will relax and just demolish people. Oh, and to address this threads title... Saban hasn't seen his last loss this season... GO AU.
NICK only took over , he did nothing , except ride he is not a builder , he adds to what someone else does . That is a talent too, Gerry was , what we needed ,Gerry disciplined and team stopped playing , this team would also . You would not like my idea for what needs to happen the back up QB he would be gone , he would not be back that is disciplined right now. He will not may it anyway . He will not behave he cannot handle all the great talent that he has , no one wants to grab and sit him down and tell him what it means to be a man , and what that great talent can do for him . But they just want to defend what he does , he is not bad , he just needs to grow up . I do not think he is as good as the Mannings , if he does not grow up, he will never prove me wrong . Will he .The Mannings did not get into trouble , WHY ?? I expect our back up QB to be as good as the Mannings !! Is that too much to ask ? If he thinks he is so good prove it , on and off the field !!
It ain't Nick. All Nick wants is to coach football and win. The marketing genius is Jimmy Sexton, who got Nick the LSU job, got him a raise every year, made him the highest paid coach in college football twice, and parleyed his losing effort at Miami into an upgrade.
