Re: 2011 QB Stephen Rivers Commits

his throwing motion, accuracy, and he is not as polished as Ely. I didnt say he couldnt be a good QB, my other concern is with Gary Crowton coaching him, I said earlier he has more upside than Ely, but at this point Ely is the more polished of the two. But right now he is a bit of a project imo.

It is ok for me not to like a recruit right? I mean I didnt like the Sam Gibson commit last year because I dont see him excelling in the SEC.

Let's not forget the source of all this name calling. Jack Daniels. Or was it Evan Williams?:thumb:

Re: 2011 QB Stephen Rivers Commits

Forgetaboutit... I chilled out after I read deuce985's post about how he doesn't think you were trying to be an ass, how he didn't see how you were bashing Rivers (and I even went back and deleted the other two posts I had posted attacking your opinion). The way I took your posts was that you were being an ass that was bashing LSU's new QB commit. It's the internet, sometimes people take things the wrong way. My bad.

And yeah, not seeing anything dickhead at all about this post about Rivers, but neither Ely or Rivers are #1 overall QB recruit material. And just because you got all excited about Ely doesn't mean you can't get excited about Rivers as well. It's not like there is a huge gap between the two... Ely was just the guy everybody on LSU recruiting boards was talking about for a while... falling in love with the idea of getting him more.

Being that several people have brought this up:

Regarding the "Crowton factor" when it comes to Ely or Rivers, I don't see how it matters. Both of these high school QBs (who have yet to begin their senior year) are ranked similarly by Rivals and Scout. Rivals has both in the #5 to #10 range as pro-style QB recruits, and Scout has them both in the #30 to #45 range as overall QB recruits.

Rivals thinks Ely is better (#5 Ely, #10 Rivers), while Scout thinks Rivers is better (Rivers at #30, and Ely at #41). But they both have them ranked similarly... Rivals thinks both of them are Top 10 as pro-style QB recruits... while Scout thinks neither of them are Top 25 as overall QB recruits.

And speaking of 53-year-old Crowton, a former award-winning QB himself, he has coached seven quarterbacks who have gone on to be selected in the NFL Draft, and he has coached two quarterbacks who have finished in the Heisman vote.

Yeah, he really sucks at developing QBs. How many coaches do you think have a better resume at coaching QBs who ended up being drafted and finishing in the Heisman vote?

And even if you do think Crowton sucks at coaching QBs, LSU also has two new guys on the offensive staff in Billy "The Kid" Gonzales (a former WR who has been coaching WRs for the legendary Urban Meyer for a while now) and former LSU and NFL QB Steve Ensminger, who has over two decades (20+ years) experience as an NCAA QB coach

Rivals probably has them right at or worse than 25th best QB as well. Scout does not split the 2 into types of QBs into separate categories and both are outside the Rivals 250 and beyond based on the positional rankings.

Despite the age difference, Philip, 28, and Stephen, 17, are extremely close. There's not a day that goes by where they don't get together in some way. They talk, text, Skype.

That is awesome to learn that Stephen and his older brother are so close (I wasn't sure, siblings aren't automatically close friends, some are, some aren't). That's a huge plus that LSU's new QB commit comes with a mentor that is a Top 10 QB in the NFL. Of course, that's not the only mentor LSU's new QB commit comes with... his father is the guy that raised them both not just as their father, but as their football coach as well.

Was also interesting to learn that:

--Last season as a junior, Stephen completed 61 percent of his passes for over 2,100 yards and 22 touchdowns. That's despite playing five of the last six games in the rain, which limited his passing opportunities.

--Stephen's own high school QB coach, Allen Creasy, says he is 6-foot-7. For those into measureables, that height puts him up with the tallest NFL QBs of all-time.

I could care less about Rivers "unorthodox" throwing motion. Success is success, no matter how you get there. I can remember a recent Heisman winner from the swamp who had "unorthodox" throwing mechanics. He did ok.

Not to mention a current member of the Titans who had a pretty good college career.

    Was just reading this:

ESPN recruiting on Ely: "Ely is a guy that you can't help but like and is very similar to last years Clint Trickett." Clint Trickett was rated #83 QB recruit by ESPN, the #36 pro-style QB recruit by Rivals (a 3-star), and the #35 overall QB recruit by Scout (3-star). He went to Florida State.

ESPN recruiting on Rivers: "there is a lot to like about Stephen Rivers...there is a lot of upside with [Rivers] in the same way we feel Tyler Bray was from the 2010 class." Tyler Bray was rated #6 overall QB recruit by ESPN, the #7 pro-style QB recruit by Rivals (a 4-star), and the #26 overall QB recruit by Scout (3-star). He went to Tennessee.
