RIVER FALLS, Wis. | Tackle Willie Roaf, the foundation of one of the NFL’s best offensive lines, has retired.

Roaf wasn’t with the Chiefs when they reported for training camp on Thursday. Roaf told The Kansas City Star this morning by telephone that he had told president/general Carl Peterson and coach Herm Edwards of his plans weeks ago and even sent the Chiefs a letter declaring his intentions.

“I guess they want me to reconsider,’’ Roaf told The Star. “I’m solid on retiring and going back to school.’’

Roaf, 36, was emphatic in the spring that he would play this season. But today he said lingering hamstring and knee trouble led to his decision.

I thought when the whole story came out it had been Jim Haslett who was banging Roaf's wife.

First ballot HOFer, no doubt about it.

And bye bye playoff chances for KC.

Do you really think KC's playoff chances were riding on Willie Roaf?

I think they were a borderline playoff contender, who would need an incredible year out of Larry Johnson, and a very good year out of Green.

I don't think they'll get either w/o Roaf in there. It was like night and day with that offense last year when Roaf was injured.

    this is true...

LJ is amazing... He'll make them serviceable

In other news with the Chiefs, Kennison is holding out, I believe. Or is doing the whole showing up to camp thing, while not wanting to be there, like T.O. last year

It was Joe Horn. I guess the question now is does Roaf go in the HOF as a Saint or a Chief? I'd say he goes in as a Chief and continues the Saints illustrious football history.

?? he had a few injuries, but he was VERY dominant in KC.

Just ask Priest Holmes. He got 20+ TDs in a season almost strictly b/c of Roaf. That team runs more toss sweeps than anyone in the league.
