Why do they hate ULL so much? ULL will never be able to compete with LSU. I am a ULL graduate, and a huge fan, but I am also a fan of LSU. Why all of this fighting? Lafayette is a great place as is Baton Rouge. I just don't get all of the negative talk from both sides?!?!? This is more so on other LSU boards, but I have seen it here too. I now live in Dallas and miss Louisiana big time. I can't wait to get back!
my reasoning is because of their little brother syndrome and not knowing their place in the grand scheme of things. The main issue I have is the way Robichaux conducts himself at The Box and how his team emulates him...piss poor attitude and zero respectability. If you were there the last few yrs before they ceased the series because of it, then you know what I am referring to. Also, the Louisiana U name bit is weak. Another example of them not knowing where they fit in college athletics. While they field respectable teams at times, they will never be a major power in any bigtime sport. Softball doesn't qualify.
Actually, it is a minority of ULL fans that make all the noise. They have this thing where LSU "keeps them down" and feel that any LSU success is another nail in their athletic coffin. They despise their regionalized name and desperately want to be recognized as a player. They had one thread with over 650 posts about their new baseball cap that had UL (rather than ULL) on the front. They can't stand the fact that 9000 show up for their football games while 50,000 are driving east on I-10 at the same time. And, I might add, they feel that Blanco is the chosen one who will smite the mighty "State" and carry them to greener pastures.
:geaux: :lsug: I think a lot goes back to the baseball series year before last that got really ugly. ULL fans but mostly the team behaved horribly and very unsportsman like.
I've posted here about my feelings towards ULL many times. I grew up in Lafayette and always tried to root for the Cajuns, starting in the mid-80s. Since they were on different playing levels, I saw nothing wrong with genuinely cheering for both teams. However, there were many times when Cajun fans would get me irritated always saying the football team could beat LSU (Hallman years) or Fletcher's b-ball teams were better than some of Dale's teams. Everything and anything was ALWAYS about LSU. Cajun fans get extremely irritated (probably rightfully so) that there are so many LSU fans in the Acadiana area. However, they fail to realize there's nothing that can be done. The entire state of LA will always be Tiger country. Boycotting businesses for being "pro-LSU" and selling more LSU gear than ULL gear is just being petty. Constantly complaining about the Advertiser's coverage of LSU gets old. I browsed the ULL forum that is linked from this site a few months ago and 90% of the threads ended with the most extreme bashing of LSU. There was even one thread about a tragic accident on Johnston St. that ended with a debate on how we are doing everything in our power to "keep them down." I guess I just have a love/hate relationship with the Cajuns and their fans but the constant referrals to us as "State" or "lsubr" or "lsu a&M @ br" just made me have to quit browsing that forum. Lafayette should support the Cajuns better. I think that's where the frustration begins. They feel that ULL should be on the same level as LSU and that probably isn't likely. Most states have at least two prominent universities (at least athletically) and that is the ultimate goal for them. LSU is standing in their way. LSU does everything to prevent that from happening. LSU is the enemy. With us being the enemy and constantly attacked, it makes it hard for someone who bleeds P&G to genuinely cheer for them.
Many folks at ULL have a case of penis envy, if you ask me. They want to be a PhD-granting Research University, and a Division I football power, and a sophisticated hollywood producer, and a brain surgeon, and a double-naught spy. Tech and ULM aren't much better. I liked the old days when Louisiana had colleges competing for football titles in every division. I followed and supported USL, Tech, and NLU when they were competitive in their old divisions. Now they are getting murdered in Division I-A and I find I don't make time to folllow them.
I find it interesting that you choose to point your finger at LSU fans..... Why don't you go over to a UL-Lafayette website and look around for a few minutes. You will notice that over half of the posts and links somehow involve LSU and the perception that UL-Lafayette fans have regarding being "held back" by LSU. One particular topic that you might see is the one that UL-Lafyette fans have titled "Battle For A Name". Read that crap and come back and ask why "LSU fans hate ULL so much". UL-Lafayette is a damn joke and should drop down to D1AA in football but they are determined to prove that they are a "big boy". I don't truthfully give a crap about UL-Lafayette at all but when the fan base of UL-Lafayette attempts to blame LSU and LSU fans for UL-Lafayette's lack of success, they become hard to ignore. Screw 'em.
