what is going on with this, I saw one report from last saturday about it and that's it. Do they have practice everyday or is it only on weekends? I know they went to the white house and all.

They practiced everday except for when they went to the White House. They have been reports in all of the papers, Tiger Rag, Rivals, etc.

They may be lifting weights but they are not on the practice fields on tues and thurs. I work at LSU and know this first hand. The NCAA mandates only 15 spring practice days. How could they go every day from Mar 20 to April 24 if they practice every day even with a week off for spring break. The scrimages count as a practice day too.

Day two of full pads brought back the heat and the big crowds as well as major intensity from the headman on a spicy Friday afternoon within the confines of the Charlie Mac Practice Facility. This is spring camp number five for Coach Nick Saban and I can honestly say that the pace and expectations for both LSU players and coaches has never been so high. One thing is obvious even to the most casual observer...there is absolutely nobody taking anything for granted on that practice field right now...

Good to see some of the injured warriors back on the field today. Senior tight end Demetri Robinson was running well and worked without the red jersey for the first time this spring. Sophomore SS Jessie Daniels was in full pads taking reps with the first team while working in his red jersey. Other players working with the red jersey and having limited contact included RB Alley Broussard, WR Craig Davis, DT Jarrod Carter, and LB's Cameron Vaughn and Dominic Cooper. Center Brandon Hurley is still nursing an injured knee, which caused him to miss today,'s practice.

There were plenty of guests viewing practice today including Matt Flynn's dad, former Tiger Marquis Hill, incoming frosh Early Doucet and recruits Ryan Perrilloux, and a QB from California by the name of Jimmy Welker (Notre Dame High, Sherman Oaks). It is amazing to see just how many people have been coming by and looking at the Tigers just in the first week of spring ball...

I had a chance to watch the quarterbacks for 15-20 minutes so please realize this is just a small part of the practice report. During that time, Marcus Randall looked and threw more confident than any day I have seen this spring. Randall has a tendency to be very good when he believes in himself and right now, his confidence level is up. Today he was outstanding throwing the pigskin while we watched him closely. Matt Flynn was running with twos and is really starting to look more comfortable with his new release point. His dad pointed out that when Matt got dinged a little last year, it made him develop a bad habit of throwing off his back foot. Today Flynn was sharp and confident and you saw no signs of his old problem. If you attend the spring game on April 24, I think you will see just what we are talking about in regards to his delivery and throwing motion. JaMarcus Russell was running mostly with the three's and had some problems with consistency when we watched him work today. I don't know if he was tired or what but his biggest problem was too much or too little air with some of his deep throws. LSU films all these drills and practices so be cognizant that we are just giving you something to munch on here and anxiously wait to see how they will all perform next Friday...

I had to joke with new DB coach Kirby Smart about his throwing so many wounded ducks earlier in the week at practice. Smart seems to be soaking up every ounce of knowledge he can from the big man and has already seen Saban's spicy side. Right now working w/first group in secondary drills include Cory Webster, Travis Daniels, LaRon Landry, Jessie Daniels, Mario Stevenson, Ronnie Prude, Daniel Francis, Greg Hercules, and Joe Lawrence who changed numbers again to number 11 and has been on defense last couple of days. Lawrence continues to remind me some of Jack Hunt...

Speaking of studs, sophomore LaRon Landry is really hitting (knocking the crap out of people right now sorry and you can sure tell that he has added an additional 10 pounds of upper body strength. This guy has superstar written all over him which is why he lead the team in tackles last year as a true frosh...

Two young defensive tackles who are trying to make a statement this spring and move up the depth chart are junior college transfer Claude Wroten and redshirt freshman Carnell Stewart. Stewart looks solid right now after coming in too heavy as a true frosh. His body is much more chiseled and don't be surprised to see him battle to stay in the two deep at DT all year. Wroten is pushing junior Brandon Washington right now for the starting spot and has also lost significant weight since the fall. Washington known as "B-Dub" has waited patiently for his turn and at about 295 looks like he is in the best shape of his life. Remember, it was not long ago that the Tigers had depth problems at DT and DE. That has changed with more top-notch recruits coming in this fall, they are going to be very deep at both of these positions with players who are big and can run!

We told you we would give you something on the other three RB's and I when we watched today we weren't disappointed in the least. Shyrone Carey is still the X factor because with his size, you almost have to figure out best how to use his skills. He continues to look quick and tough and Jimbo will have to find ways to utilize his skills.. Jason Spadoni is obviously bigger (you should see his arms) and I don't think there are too many DB's who want to try and tackle him. Barrington Edwards was running like he was shot out cannon and will probably be valuable in special teams once again this season. If there are any injuries here this fall, Tigers have plenty studs salivating like one of Pavlov's dogs waiting their turn...

Saban was funny at times this afternoon because he is a perfectionist and he knows this defensive stuff like you know the alphabet. The young DB's, on the other hand, sometimes forget their assignments and know there is extra scrutiny since the head coach is so heavily involved in the teaching aspect. Nobody and I mean nobody wants to get a verbal butt chewing. Saban pleaded with his guys not to make him cuss while in front of the big crowd watching the workout.

Hey Tiger fans, isn't it nice to watch these games and see that the DB's are actually taught to turn around and try and catch the ball. If you are a high school recruit and want to play in the NFL, why not learn from the best?

Walk-ons who are busting their tail to see the field this spring are WR's Gino Giambelluca, Terrell Clayton, Steve Mares, and Andre Gill. DB's Greg Hercules and Patrick Babinecz and OL Josh Dicharry, Dave Davis and Harold Bicknell. We don't consider TE Andrew Wright a walk-on anymore and rightfully so as he is a lot of folks sleeper of the spring...

Speaking of the tight ends, Demetri Robinson, David Jones, Keith Zinger, Kory Hebert and Wright make up this handful. Mit Cole from Mississippi is coming in this fall. Robinson has shown signs of progress only to be stymied by injuries. He will probably be number one tight end for blocking purposes. David Jones is still playing both TE and fullback and like BB says, does a better job of blocking with a running start. I was a little surprised that Zinger played so much last year but the coaches really like him a lot especially as a blocker. He has also fought bumps and bruises since being in Tiger town. This is the first year Hebert has had legit TE size and we will wait to see scrimmage action before we comment on his role. Finally, Andrew Wright is the tallest target on the team and grown to the 255-260 range. How much he plays this fall will be determined by what he does in the upcoming spring scrimmages. Overall TE looks to be another solid position for LSU in 2004...

Tigers will go back-to-back days with another workout tomorrow afternoon at 2:30PM. So far (knock on wood) but I don't think we have even seen any problems or serious injuries to this point in the camp. Nick Saban and his coaches will give the team off Sunday and work Monday and Wednesday of next week before having the first spring scrimmage of year next Friday in Tiger Stadium.

Weekday practices start at 3:00 and are only open to guests(former players, family, media, and registered high school coaches and players). Weekends are more flexable on starting time and are in the afternoon.
