.:: 225BatonRouge.com ::. When the hippies took over Prairieville 40 years ago this month. OK, so I was 12 when this happened, and used to go to the BR Speedway to watch stock car racing (of course State Capital was and still is the local drags). I remember this concert, but I wasn't there. I have to think that someone on this board was either there or knows somebody who was. I gotta know - what was it like? Can we get a report? Gratuitous drug comments and/or arrest stories are welcomed, of course.
Funny how they misspelled Grateful Dead. I can't believe all those stars. Chicago, Santana, The Byrds, Canned Heat, the Youngbloods. wow. Check out the ticket prices. $7.00! I never even heard of it. Of course, I was 8 years old at the time. I'll have to ask my oldest sister if she went.
I remember the track because I went out there for races a few times but since I was on 3-4 when the concert took place I don't recall that. But yea...taht would have been an awesome show.
You guys. 2 weeks after Woodstock, me & my pal Tommy, (both 19), took off for Pensacola to pretend to go to community college and dodge the draft. We towed our Triumph motorcycles to P'cola and saw the poster for the festival in BRouge. We took off on our bikes across, ($9.00 between us), the Gulf Coast right after hurricane Camille, the place was a disaster. We got to NOLA, rode down Bourbon St. and headed for the Raceway. Turned out that the deal was anyone who rode a bike to the festival got in for free! We got royal treatment, campsite, food, weed, and some really nice young ladies. Concert was unbelievable, way better than Woodstock ,and only 1/10th of the crowd. Best festival of the period and probably least known of. Cons
Awesome first post! Man I wish I had been just a few years older. That kind of festival just doesn't seem to happen anymore. Welcome to the forum :thumb:
I was there. I still remember seeing most of the bands. Maybe I haven't lost as many brain cells as I would have thought. Grateful Dead was the last band to play. They played for hours until almost daylight. you can see their performance at http://archives.org if you search for grateful dead/baton rouge speedway
Awesome first post? Maybe if you completely ignore the draft comments. Not sure how that can be ignored though.
I missed that one, but I was at the woodstock-like country FUBAR known as The Celebration of Life in '71.
