It's really too early to even be talking about hoops recruiting two years from now, but not when it's about LA 2012 prep phenom, Ricardo Gathers. TigerBait has a good article talking to him...

What I took away from the article is that no longer should we consider Gathers purely a "post" player. He's broadening his game beyond that and arguably would end up a "3" instead of a "4". His athletic talent and body remind some of LeBron James (i.e., man-child look at 6'7"-8"). Also, the article states that while a year ago Gathers may have been dead set on heading to the west coast, now he's seriously looking at LSU b/c of the coaches there. Keep the pressure on, Trent and staff! We cannot let this kid get away. :) :bball: :geauxtige

Debatable whether this year's top 28 should be in this thread, but nonetheless here are the brackets for the tourney, as well as some tidbits about the teams... LSU is paying close attention to various games including watching Matt Derenbecker of Country Day, Ricardo Gathers of Riverside. You've also go a few other Div 1 prospects who seem like interesting prospects but whom for various reasons didn't catch scholarship fire--JJ Thomas, a 6'4" ish power forward from Scotlandville, Pat Swilling Jr., a 6'3" SG from Brother Martin.

Will be interesting to watch some of these kids against good competition...

And, despite not making to the Top 28, St. Augustine is and will continue to be loaded with talent. Trent is watching two serious PGs in the class of 2012--Javon Felix, who most project to be the best PG in LA that year.... See: http://lsu.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1060730.

And a kid, L.J. Rose out of Houston, a 6'3" PG who is racking up offers and getting greater national acclaim...

Given reports that LSU is out and about watching a lot of the high school games right now, I think it's safe to say that CTJ knows that recruiting is key, and that 2012 will be another year, like 2010, that is huge for him and his staff.

Admittedly I know very little about basketball recruiting but what I do know is that we are hit and miss on these types of guys. We tend to do pretty well in Baton Rouge but we lose a lot of the big LA players. Having said that, Trent really hasn't gone after one I dont think. I think the last big player in LA was Greg Monroe. So the question is, can CTJ pull in this type of player. If he has another year like this year, he will have to if he wants to keep the fan base on board. What do you think HornLand?

Kind of agree with you on this, Gathers is likely both to be not as decorated a player as Monroe (Monroe was legitimately a top 5-10 recruit his year) and as good of a "pro" prospect. That is largely dependent on whether Gathers grows a few more inches or not. If he is 6'9" (about the same as Monroe, who is probably 6'9"-10"), he will be a lottery pick kind of guy b/c he is pure power player, prototypical PF in the NBA if he reaches 6'9" and is likely a 245 lb guy. Monroe is more of a "point forward" type that likes to play more outside and slash in and is not as much a power player, although he's certainly capable.

I also agree with mobius that since Monroe, arguably DJ Augustin, there hasn't been a 5 star LA player to come out. Brady as we all know whiffed on both of these. Other LA players, such as LaceDarius Dunn and Tweety Carter (4 star ish range), and a host of 3 star guys (Shan Foster, guys that went to MS fo college) have also left the state. Alot has been made of "what if" those guys had stayed to play at LSU.

What I don't agree with, Mobius, is that Trent has to "show" us something in the short period to stay around. IMO, he has shown something with his 2010-11 class, to forgive some, if not all, of this season.. Now, I've been saying all along that 2012 is a bellweather year as far as Trent's LA recruiting litmus test. If things continue for Gathers (i.e., he grows) he'll likely stay a 5 star. But, he has a possibility of dropping to a 4 star. Others like Javon Felix in that year have a chance to be a 4 star. But, it's hard to say that there is a Greg Monroe guy for sure in 2012. It may be a slightly better and deeper LA class than 2010-11. And, so, you'd like to see Trent's staff get some quality LA players. We have to also see though, what his "overall" class looks like. Much like this year, we have to acknowledge that sometimes LA players will just want to go out of state... as long as Trent's signing comparable or better players from out of state, I'm fine with that. This year, Trent chose to go into TX, MS and AL and pick up various players from out of state that he felt were better for his system. And, this year, there was no 5 star kid in LA, and arguably only Derenbecker that was borderline 4 star. For the record, the arguably best player in LA for 2011-12, John Isaac has already committed to LSU (now, again, he's like a 3-4 star range guy).

I believe that if fans are objective, Trent signed a top 10 class this past year (that's with Malcolm White transfer, and new spring signee KC Ross Miller) and that's good enough from a recruiting perspective to say the program's on the right track. Obviously, there hasn't been a 5 star guy coming out of LA yet to say, this guy is a "must have." With Gathers, that'll be a bell weather signing. I think in 2013, that guy will be the Bridgewater kid out of Episcopal. He is another LA 5 star right now.

I'm ok with Trent "hitting or missing" some on these kinds of guys, as long as he's filling his classes with good overall talent like 2010-11. I do think long term, he needs to get a few of these 5 stars to mix in with very good classes. But, he's a good enough coach to get the program where it needs to go with top 10 classes as opposed to top 2 or 3 classes.
